INTENT

At English Martyrs’ Roman Catholic Primary School we intend to build a Design and Technology Curriculum which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills as set out in the National Curriculum Design and Technology Programmes of study. Through design and technology we want children to know more, remember more and understand more. We intend to design a Design and Technology Curriculum which prepares children to deal with tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. Design and technology is designed at our school to encourage children to become thinkers, doers and explainers of the world. We strive to support children to develop into adults who can be proactive humans that can creatively work independently, as a team and develop the confidence and skills to also be encouraged to lead. Design and Technology at English Martyrs’ helps them to consider their and others’ own spirituality, morals, culture, mentality and physical development and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life.

Design and technology enables them to identify problems and opportunities and to respond to them by developing a range of ideas and by making products and systems so that they can become problem solvers. They will combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as functions and industry. This allows them to reflect on and evaluate past and present technology, its uses and impacts. We aim, as much as possible, to ensure cross-curricular links with disciplines such as art, computing, science, PSHE, literacy and mathematics.

IMPLEMENTATION

We will develop children’s expertise to become creative, technical and practical, so that they can perform everyday tasks effectively. English Martyr’s will ensure children develop their understanding of technology to help them develop their expertise in these areas.

At English Martyrs’ we will ensure children design and make high quality prototypes and products for a range of uses so that they can solve relevant problems.

Children will use their skills developed to critique, evaluate and test their ideas, prototypes and products.

They will have a growing understanding of the principles of nutrition which will include developing their knowledge of where food comes from and the importance of a healthy and varied diet.  They will get the opportunity to develop their understanding through the opportunity of being involved in a range of practical activities such as cooking their own food.

We will also ensure in our curriculum and planning strategy that we will encourage the use of accurate technical vocabulary during discussions and written work to ensure we continually focus on improving oracy skills.

At English Martyrs’ each year group will undertake one project or activity per term and we will follow our progression map to ensure we teach the required range of skills and knowledge in each year.

IMPACT

English Martyrs’ teaching of Design and Technology will be assessed through a number of different ways. Teachers will provide feedback during lessons and ensure careful questioning and planning for child led discussions. Teachers will be able to provide Subject Lead with evidence and that evidence will include samples of work, videos and photographs which will either be kept in a separate folder or in their art books. The Subject Lead will undertake observations and book/folder looks each term.

At the end of each year and stipulated in the National Curriculum each child will be able to:

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks
  • Be able to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • Be able to design prototypes and products for a wide range of users by building and applying knowledge, understanding and skills
  • Be able to work individually and collectively to critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition in their everyday lives and also learn how to cook
