Intent

The PSHE curriculum at English Martyrs’ R.C. Primary School is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos.  This curriculum has been designed to support all pupils in becoming ‘lifelong learners’, with the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding as they  encounter  new challenges,  face new experiences or find  themselves in situations they are unfamiliar with. We believe that children are all individuals and therefore, as a school, we aim to encourage mutual respect, responsibility and foster self-esteem in a caring and happy environment. Pupils are taught about making positive choices and they are recognised and rewarded when they make those choices. Our pupils are also encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth and to contribute positively to school life and the wider community.

IMPLEMENTATION  

The PSHE curriculum is delivered through a combination of dedicated PSHE lessons, assemblies and enrichment opportunities. The values that we believe in are constantly reinforced through our Core Values and positive ‘Good to Be Green’ behaviour system. Many of the texts that pupils study are chosen to stimulate discussions about the emotions of characters which provide opportunities for pupils to discuss their own issues and concerns. At the beginning of each academic year, we aim to start with a whole-school text which focuses on one of our Core Values. Lessons are taught discretely in Relationship and Sex Education (RSE), Mind Up and Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Education (DATE) and there are always occasions where staff may feel it necessary to teach PSHE (Circle Time) due to an issue which has emerged in their own class. We have yearly celebrations of Black History Month, Parliament Week and Anti- Bullying Week. We have also started the Rights Respecting School (RRS) programme whereby pupils learn their rights,

Pupils are taught to: 

  • to use technology safely and responsibly
  • to develop their self esteem, confidence and self-awareness to make the right choices
  • to develop their social skills and social awareness
  • to have responsible attitudes towards good physical and mental health, supported by a  safe and healthy lifestyle
  • to manage and understand their feelings
  • to understand British Values
  • to make sense of their personal and social experiences
  • to learn how to keep themselves safe in case of a fire
  • to develop effective interpersonal relationships and a caring attitude towards others
  • to understand how society works and their rights and responsibilities as citizens.

IMPACT  

We have many areas of PSHE that the school regularly engages in. These include (but are not limited to): PSHE lessons, various classroom visitors, school trips, Junior Citizenship, exposing children to a wide variety of literature and asking them to see things from different viewpoints and our School Council. A strong sense of what it means to be a good learner and a positive member of the school community is instilled in the pupils through our positive behaviour system. We can confidently say that our school helps pupils to develop their PSHE skills both in and out of lessons.  By tapping into issues in the world, our pupils can also see how their voices and actions can impact the world. They develop an understanding of our diverse and complex world, and empathy and respect for the rights of all individuals. Our PSHE curriculum helps pupils to deal with friendships, emotional wellbeing and change which are crucial issues that they face daily.


ENRICHMENT  

Through our enriched curriculum, pupils SMSC curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured as they are offered a wide range of opportunities to develop into well-rounded, responsible citizens. This is done through inspirational visits and visitors, weekly reward assemblies, and parent workshops. The pupils are always delighted to support people who are less fortunate within the UK and around the world.  They donate to food banks and disaster reliefs such as earthquake, floods, hurricanes and charities such as the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD).
