INTENT:

At English Martyrs RC Primary and Nursery School we promote a society that everyone is welcomed. We believe that an early acquisition of Morden Foreign Language skills will facilitate the learning of other languages later in life.  In order to inspire our pupils to develop a love of languages and to expand their horizons to other countries, cultures and people, we learn French.

We aim to give pupils the opportunity to build their French language skills, enabling them to express their ideas and thoughts in the language and to provide opportunities to interact and communicate with others both in speech and in writing. We aim to expose our pupils to authentic French and regular opportunities to listen to native speakers.

We believe our pupils will acquire basic skills and understanding of French, in Lower KS2 with a strong emphasis placed on developing their Speaking and Listening skills. These skills will be embedded and further developed in Upper KS2, alongside Reading and Writing, which will gradually progress onto more complex language concepts and greater learner autonomy. Our intent is that as our pupils grow into curious, confident and reflective language learners they will also be provided with a foundation that will equip them for further language studies as they transition into secondary school.

IMPLEMENTATION:

We teach French from Year 3 upwards and use the scheme ‘RIGOLO’ by Oxford Press to support our pupils’ learning covering the requirements of the National Curriculum in England: Language Programme of Study in KS2. The scheme ensures that pupils are motivated with fun stories, songs and games, and provides teacher with extra support – onscreen ‘virtual teacher’. Rigolo is an interactive resource with a strong focus on pronunciation, songs to aid memorisation, inclusion of cultural insight and light-touch on grammar.

  • Practical and interactive online activities are used to help improve memory and recall while keeping pupils engaged.
  • During lessons, whenever possible, instructions are delivered in French to expose children to the language as much as possible and in day to day contexts.
  • Whole classroom activities along with independent tasks are part of every weekly lesson to boost pupils’ confidence and give them self-assessment opportunities.
  • Differentiated worksheets in Year 3 &4 are used for each lesson to ensure that children access work at age related expectations, and Years 5&6 pupils are given opportunities to be challenged through higher level objectives in writing.
  • Classroom displays depict current concepts and are used to remind pupils of key vocabulary and refer to them at any time.
  • Consistent ‘good to be green’ and certificates reward system is used to build speakers confidence for any contribution that they make in French.

In order to promote a deep sense of cultural immersion, every classroom takes part in activities such as French day which includes a French food and whole school French assembly.

IMPACT:

The long-term Rigolo scheme ensures that knowledge in the French language builds up as learners’ progress through the academic year. As a result, pupils’ attainment is developing, allowing them to progress and build confidence in their learning beyond primary school, equipping them for a globalised, multi-cultural world.

Worksheets in Yeas 3 and 4 and recorded activities in books Year 5 and 6 show that pupils develop a range of skills and language that, over time, enable them to communicate in French with other speakers. Books also show that students have opportunities for practice and refinement of skills within the MFL curriculum from Year 3 to Year 6.
